Healthy Flapjack Recipe

Posted on | July 13, 2011 | 13 Comments

You may not think flapjacks are that healthy but this low fat recipe will keep you full up to lunch – so no snacking! The following recipe used less butter, sugar and honey instead of golden syrup so this should enable you to eat with a clear conscience.

The basic ingredients

Ingredient

Measurement

Brown Sugar 80g
Butter 40g
Margarine 60g
Oats 250g
Salt Pinch (optional)
Banana One
Honey 2 tablespoons

1. Melt the butter and the Margarine in a deep saucepan over a low heat
2. add the brown sugar and 2 tablespoons of honey and stir in until you have a brown paste
3. Mix in the oats, if you find it easier add them in gradually stirring and covering the oats with the mixture
4. add a pinch of salt and continue to stir (if you really need to be healthy you can ignore the salt!)
5. Mash up the banana and stir in to the mixture (this may take sometime to make sure the banana is properly mixed in)
6. spread the mixture evenly over a non stick baking tray (or a greased baking tray). Smooth over with a knife until the mixture is even
7. Place the baking tray onto the middle shelf in a preheated oven (gas mark 5, 220 C) and bake for 15 minutes, checking the progress regularly. Take out when the mixture starts turning a darker colour.
8. Stand for a minute or two, then score the mixture with a knife into you portions
9. Cover the tray with something light such as a few pieces of kitchen roll and leave for up to 6 hours

Preparation Time: 15 Mins: Cooking Time: 15 Mins

Tip: You may find depending on what honey you use that the flapjack does not brown up that much. Make sure you don’t over cook it.

Totally delicious, quick, easy and very filling. Any alternative suggestions to peanut butter for replacing some of the butter and margarine? Want them to be suitable for a nut allergy sufferer.
    Thanks

You don’t actually need any butter. I replace all the sugar and butter with honey, and add raisins, sultanas, shopped dates and apricots to add sweetness.
Try 1 cup of boiling water and 1 teaspoon of bicarb of soda mixed together…add 1/2 cup of dried chopped dates to the mix and stand for 5 mins. Mix 1 cup of oats, 1/4 cup of bran and at least 1 cup of any type of dried fruit together in a bowl and add water and date mix…..add just enough honey until desired taste is reached.
press down very firmly into a tray lined with greasproof paper and bake for 15-25 mins or until firm to touch.
remove from oven and just leave to sit for 6 hours covered.

I add nuts and chocolate chips to mine…and hemp for iron, …and take them on my long bike rides… never needed anything else..

Just finished making our version of the recipe and OMG, they are to die for.
    We swapped…
    Butter for peanut butter
sugar and honey for maple syrup
Oats for maple syrup flavoured oats
and we kept the rest the same.

THEY ARE THE BEST FLAPJACKS EVER! Definitely will make them again :D Thanks for putting them up here ^^

These tasted fantastic. They didn’t last very long in my house. I ring the changes by adding different dried fruits, nuts and seeds.

i make them mostly all the time, and i make them with different types of fruit everytime or add two types of fruit at the same time. the fruityer the better! use butter with no added salt and melt brown suger together then stir in the oats, then mix in whatever fruit u like and then spinkle in some cinnamon for extra tast.then put in the oven for 15mins. very tasty, and very good for little ones and a good idea to get little one’s eaten fruit. :)
